Stay Fit and Healthy While Traveling this Summer

Health

Planning vacations may come easily to you, but maintaining or losing weight during those trips can be a challenge many of us struggle with. However, it is not impossible to achieve your weight and wellness goals while on vacation. With a little extra effort and mindfulness, you can become a person who successfully manages your health while enjoying your travels. Yes, it is possible!

Plan Your Meals

Plan out your meals and don’t leave it to the last minute to decide what you’re eating and where you are eating. Research the stops you’ll make, locate restaurants that offer healthy meal options, or consider visiting the grocery store instead of the fast food spot if you’re hitting the open road. If you’re traveling and going through airports, take bamboo utensils (so you can make it through security) and pack your meals and snacks for travel days (remember, there may be a delay too so pack enough food to get you through the day). If you’re going by car, consider taking a cooler so you have more control over your food options for yourself and your family. You can’t go wrong with simple options like sliced fruits, veggie sticks, cheese, salads, or wraps when on the go. These foods are super easy to prepare and will keep you full and healthy while you’re on the move!

Stay Hydrated

Pack your water bottles. Drinking enough water while you travel is essential to keep yourself hydrated and feeling good. Avoid sugary beverages including soda, sweet tea, or energy drinks. In addition, alcohol can dehydrate you quickly, so try to avoid it if possible. Opt for water or herbal teas.

Take Breaks and Stretch

If you’re driving, take regular breaks to stretch and move around, especially during long-haul journeys. If you’re on a plane, take advantage of the opportunity to walk up and down the aisle, or stand up and stretch. You can also do stretching exercises such as neck rotations, wrist circles, leg raises, or toe touching, to keep your body moving, flexible, and active.

Find Time to Move

Finding time to exercise when you’re traveling by air or car can be challenging but not impossible. If you’re driving, park the car far from the destination, and walk the remaining distance. You can also take the stairs instead of the elevator, walk around the hotel, or do some yoga in your hotel room. If you’re flying, take a walk around the airport terminal during layovers, or hit the hotel gym when you reach your destination.

Get Adequate Sleep

Sleep is important for overall health and well-being. While traveling can disrupt your sleep schedule, aim to get adequate rest when possible. Pack a comfortable travel pillow and an eye mask to help you sleep comfortably on the plane or in the car. Try to keep your sleep schedule consistent, and avoid using your electronic devices before going to bed.

Traveling doesn’t have to mean sacrificing your healthy lifestyle and it certainly doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. By planning your meals, staying hydrated, taking breaks and stretches, finding time to exercise, and getting adequate sleep, you can stay fit and healthy even when you travel. Remember that maintaining a healthy routine while traveling is essential in achieving your weight loss goals and leading an active, balanced life.
