Breaking News: Administration Announces Deal to Lower Weight Loss Drug Prices

What Was Announced Today

The administration announced new agreements with Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk that could significantly lower the costs of these medications for some patients. Here’s what you need to know:

For Patients with Medicare:

  • Cost could be reduced to $245 per month (with a $50 copay) for Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound
  • These prices are expected to begin around mid-2026 (likely July)
  • Not all Medicare patients will qualify – eligibility depends on specific criteria (more on this below)

For Everyone – The TrumpRx Program:

  • A new direct-to-consumer website is planned to launch by early 2026
  • Prices through this platform would be around $350 per month for injections
  • If oral GLP-1 medications are approved in the future (Orforglipron is an investigational, once-daily oral GLP-1 medication being studied for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and obesity), starting doses may be available for $149 per month

What This Means for You Right Now

The most important thing: Nothing changes immediately.

  • These new prices won’t be available until 2026 at the earliest
  • If you’re currently taking one of these medications, continue as prescribed
  • If you’re struggling with costs now, let’s talk about current options and in the future, know more options will be available

What We're Watching

As your physician and advocate, I’m following several questions:

  1. Insurance landscape: How this might affect commercial insurance coverage going forward. Many of you may currently be receiving medications under your prescription benefit plan.
  2. The TrumpRx platform: How this direct-purchase option will actually work in practice and will supply keep up with the demand.

What You Should Do Now

Don’t stop your current medication – these changes are still 1-2 years away

Keep your appointments – obesity is a chronic medical condition that needs ongoing management, not just medication

Remember What Matters Most

Whether these prices go into effect or not, the fundamental truth remains: Obesity is a medical condition, not a character flaw. Effective treatment combines nutrition, movement, behavior modification, medical support, and sometimes medication.

Weight loss medications are powerful tools, but they work best as part of comprehensive care – which is exactly what we provide at Weight Sense.
